Dub Be Good To Me

Uhf! The original of this track is also really brill but I prefer this particualr version cos it's a deep dub and I just really like deep dubzzz. It's a matter of principle. Like how you're vegetarian except for when you eat salmon... and turkey on Christmas - Duh!  From the B-Side of Lil' Mark's Pulling Strings EP, Leeds based vinyl enthusiast and local house scene lynch pin Jacob Kelly aka. J.Cub, gives this slow-burning acid/techno chugger a drop of GHB. Wild sex and euphoria ensue. J.Cub is a busy guy and this EP dropped last month via the more established of his two (yes two) own imprints, Eclectic Avenue. His other venture CUB Records, was founded earlier this year in order to serve as a platform through which to digitally release some of his own material. FYI.

Modern Vintage

Was pretty suprised to discover that this track was released near 8 years ago, when I came accross it in a mix today. Dunno if it's the raw, In Flagranti style, building precussion or the key section at 4:00 that screams One For Kenny, but the Unabombers rework of the US based collective Electric South's original, gives off some pretty contemporary vibes. Then again I guess that's simply the nature of a timeless beast... You can find a few copies of this vintage (too soon?) vinyl only release, rolling around on Discogs.

Non Compost Mentis

January 24. Gosh it's almost February can you believe it? How are you finding the new year? Are you feeling fresh for the new year? It's just like the old year but newer you know? Have you settled in to 2013 well? Have you found it easy? Honestly tell me... I would just fucking LOVE to know. Seriously.

Just a few things that have kept me untzing alone the past 24 days.

Fresh faced German Show-B has already garnered himself quite a following and well... beginning the year with an EP released on the fabled Munich label Compost Records, is just really good innit? // Some philosopher once theorised that if Bedmo Disco stopped making disco, the whole genre would just evaporate like water at boiling point. It's just a working hypothesis obviously but this edit from Awon should be kind of self explanatory then. // Couldn't really go without mentioning this. If you're like me and your vinyl collection looks a bit like a pensioners superannuation, you can breathe easy knowing that Jamie L's 2012 EP What We Saw In The Burg is finally available from all the usual digital pedlers. For one of the better releases of the last year, it's definitely worth today's Red Bull dollas.

I Know Nothing

Fuck so how did you get here? Did you get assaulted by a tramp brandishing a pre-loved syringe? Vintage just isn't a good look for everything hey, but seriously this isn't the 80's man, there's like treatment for that shit now...

Before you begin backing away from this abomination, I'll tell you that that I haven't looked for music in like ever, so all new material I come across sounds amazing to my uneducated ear... I was at a festival the other week and was like fuck this song is amaz and my friend was like I know right, it's called Promises. Essentially I'm trying to say that Kirill Tipo is as good as Nero or something. He is the next Nero even... is Nero even a guy? You can probably quote me on that.

What's It All About

I've been out of it for a while but I get back and something are just the same.

I caught a listen of Rayko's Tigerblood Drops II Mixtape, out on his soundcloud, and again I sit and listen and grin like a kid. That 70/80's Boogie Funk butter rolling over you makes Rayko a pillar of the nu.disco field.

I can't help but agonise over the tracklist however whilst disparaging Shazam and SoundHound I force myself to take a step-back. Just like present hungry kids at Christmas, stop and think, what is this really about? The second that sweet listing drops I'll never look back at this mix, tearing it apart like the wrapping paper from a present, getting at the juicy insides. Rayko did a good thing here, pause, reflect and then start fidgeting impatiently like the rest of us. . . and you will there are some cool cats in here.

110%

In the 18 months since Ital's namesake EP Ital's Theme fronted their debut, LA based imprint 100% Silk has established itself as one of the most promising and engaging electronic music labels within the US.. In the last month or so a limited edition VA compilation, curated by the label in lieu of their Japan tour, was given a 1000 copy CD release via Tokyo distributor Melting Bot... and yeah, while these days, a lot of label's own various artist LP's have more in common with a bargain bin at the factory outlet of a maternity store than influential music, this thing is definately more I Wanna See All My Friends At Once than a shelf of electric bottle warmers. Not 100% sure where you can acquire yourself a copy of this gem, but a lot of the tracks are available individually if you look around.

Thou Shalt Not Covet

There's a Red Cross Blood Service trailer always parked near the library at uni. It sits there so foreboding 'save three lives', beckoning my donation debut - I can feel the judgmental eyes of the do-gooders, that are seated on little plastic chairs outside it whilst filling in medical history forms, pierce my back as I hurry past with my head down. Then there's the post-donors strutting around with a little cotton wool ball taped to the inside of their elbow, as if they're a mutilated war veteran and it's 11/11. In my mind I'm just like put your jumper back on, it's winter. I feel the same way about buying vinyl. Knowing that it's something I should, but seldom do, has made me bitter and twisted - esp with the huge wave of vinyl only releases, the pool of stuff I'll never be able to own/catch up on, has now tripled in size. The debut of Young Adult's maiden EP yesterday gave me suicidal nightmares. You can hear why.

The Dead Rose Music Company - Soothe My Mind

B2 of the aforementioned record, is an interesting collab between American (somewhere in Canada and/or the US) based duos LOL Boys and Grown Folk. For now only a clip of Ghostpath is available to listen to on the interweb, but given the caliber of the tracks below, plus an A side which also contains a new disco number from Suzanne Kraft, I would give blood for this record. Or you can buy it here.

Wolves Don't Dance

As you're likely in the habit of reading worthwhile zines like Slothboogie, this will be old news but I'm going to give my two cents anyway just like out of spite or something. Despite having seen its initial debut as part of Wolf Music's VA WOLFEP009 about 9 months ago, Greymatter's bass-heavy-UK-influenced track Give It To Me Slow, was given its own EP release, complete with a swag of remixes, just a couple of weeks ago. It's been a while since German duo Session Victim have been given an airing on Wolf Music, and there really couldn't be a more opportune moment for Freer and Reiling's soft house/disco touch to compliment a track like the aformentioned. TIEF is the other original of Luckhurst's (Greymatter) on the EP, and it's one of those crescendo ridden, gurning crowd pleasers - so big lock-jaw smiles all around. Buy this release from Juno or something.

These days Seuil is pretty big deal, but for one reason or another this remix he did for Dyed Soundorom back in '08 kind of got swept under the carpet. I stumbled across this track by accident when it started playing on my iPod - I would usually flick when that happens, but at the time I was elbow deep birthing elephant calves. Lucky hey. This track is a total tease, and regardless of whether or not you've a penchant for tech, there is this kind of non-drop that the whole thing builds up to just after 5 mins, that might well knock your dirty socks off.

Exceptional Exception

As a rule, Patricia's inbox only attracts mailouts from aspiring indie/folk bands and musicians - generally just Mormon freaks based somewhere in middle America. The attached essay length account of the respective artist/s complete life story tends to be worse than the music itself. One time Patricia got sent a demo from a Canadian rapper. One other time, she got sent this from Siberia.

Space Holiday Rocks - Women

Anton Glebev has been working under the pseudonym
Space Holiday Rocks for about three years, and the 10 track album RAW is his first full-length production which was dropped at the end of May by the interesting Russian imprint Echotourist. For a label (as its name might suggest) with more than a few experimental ambient releases to its name, Glebev's LP is spectacularly refreshing, yet comfortably familiar, and while I certainly wouldn't go out and call it disco any time soon, tiny slices of particular songs instantly reminded of Suzanne Kraft's track's Green Flash and Femme Cosmic. On the label's Bandcamp RAW is tagged under indietronic and acousmatic???? Best news is the entire album is available for $0 here.

You're Probably Saying It Wrong

By the time it came around, I'd been waiting over 6 months for my first visit to Berlin's fabled bathouse-cum-discotheque Kleine Reise, which ended up being my only visit, coinciding with one of the last evenings the place would ever open. Feeling a bit sadistic and having spent the last three weeks travelling sans a 3G-capable phone, there was no time like the then present to slip some GHB into the drink of an unsuspecting patron who had a name like Peter or Robert. After close and we all spilled out onto the footpath, I lifted Paul/John's iPhone and left him slumped in Gorlitzer to be rear-ended or something. Crossing the street to avoid faux-coke wheelers on my way back to the station,  I was overcome with this feeling that if my life were to end prematurely, I could die knowing I might have accomplished something in an existence which had thus far been largely unsuccessful and marred with a sad string of D-grade triumphs.

Peter Power - Sun-K           digital/vinyl

For everyone who missed out, it really is a fucking shame that the original home of Kleine Reise has, at least whilst their neighbours keep minding other people's business, closed its doors - however the myth lives on regularly at Loftus Hall and Renate, and as of now through the brand's natural foray into the imprint business. KRR001 dropped in April, and seeing as its now almost June, I've stalled long enough on the 3 track EP that might well be one of the best releases I've come across this year (thus far). That said, my word count was up at least 10 minutes ago - so press play to bare witness to the blossoming genius that is Peter Power, and the jazzy hues of newcomer Dara. Better still, keep it for yourself on vinyl or digi over at Juno and Beatport. Google Translate suggests Kleine Reise translates as small travel. Go figure.
